A wonderful opportunity to spend time with your little ones and get them involved in the "present giving" festivities of the season is to have a cookie day! So, roll up your sleeves and spend a very messy day in the kitchen with the help of little hands and make huge batches of cookies (or anything you choose) to give as holiday gifts. This can drastically save you time and money in the long run, but also delivers a personal gift that friends and family will enjoy, and involves your children in the giving process. I have found that our son has a lot more fun giving gifts when he is a part of making them, and that it really drives the true meaning of gift giving home when you spend time thinking about and making something for the people you love. Try our easy sugar cookie recipe below and use some fun cookie cutters and decorations to celebrate the season!
Want to avoid all that sugar?
A fun Substitution for this idea would be a family craft day (necklaces, pictures, ornaments, or whatever works with your traditions).
Sugar Cookies
3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
Combine flour baking powder and salt and set aside. Cream together butter and sugar and beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla. Gradually add flour mixture until well blended. Cover and keep in the refrigerator for about 2 hours (this will make rolling and cutting much easier).
Preheat oven to 350* Roll out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Cut out into shapes and place on greased cookie sheets. Bake 6-8 minutes or until very lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheets and cool. Decorate as desired (we suggest: crushing candy canes and mixing with buttercream frosting for a fun holiday treat).
